Reaksmey Sangkhim

Reaksmey Sangkhim - “Light of Hope” is an HIV/AIDS Prevention and Education program funded through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, AIDS Bureau. Reaksmey Sangkhim provides culturally competent HIV/AIDS prevention and education services to adult Cambodian men and women living in the Lowell area. Asian Temple CandlesTo accomplish this work, the staff conduct multi-leveled interventions. Outreach to the community occurs through various venues; small businesses, community agencies, health and human service organizations and local temples; all of which work with Cambodian consumers and have the opportunity of connecting these consumers to Reaksmey Sangkhim. Group educational sessions allow for the implementation of a scientifically based HIV/AIDS curriculum with cultural adaptations “Living in Good Health Together.” Additionally, community health forums provide for educational opportunities to larger groups of Cambodians.

Given that local cable television is an instrumental source of health care information for Cambodians, the Community Health Liaison provides HIV/AIDS information via the use of Public Service Announcements and/or Cambodian films. To evaluate various components of the program, Reaksmey Sangkhim works in conjunction with Brandeis University and is able to provide evaluative data.
