Whole Health is Our Goal

At Lowell Community Health Center our goal is to enrich patients' overall health and wellness by offering services and programs that take a holistic, or "whole" health approach. We seek to connect patients with information and skills for living a healthier lifestyle. Beyond primary medical care patients may choose to participate in support groups, health education programs, health topic seminars, mental health services, youth programs and many other offerings.

SUPPORT GROUPS

Depression Support Group - Relating to others who are experiencing depression in a safe and confidential setting helps those who battle depression to better understand the nature of the illness. A group for current patients of the Health Center. Call Cathy for more information at 978-322-8812.

Open Heart Group - Peer support group for men & women living with HIV. Come and connect with others. Share your experiences in a confidential, respectful and caring environment. For more information or to join, call Abdul-Wahab at 978-322-8673.

Women’s Group - Peer support group for women living with HIV. A place for women to come together and share their strength, hope and wisdom with each other. For more information or to join, call Ivelisse at 978-322-8659.

X-pression - Peer support group for men & women living with HIV. Form friendships with others through education and the creativity of arts and crafts. For more information or to join, call Carmen at 978-322-8664.

L.I.F.E. (Learning Immune Function Enhancement) - A health enhancement and wellness counseling program for people living with HIV. For more information or to join, call Abdul-Wahab at 978-322-8673.

HEALTH EDUCATION GROUPS & ADVISORY BOARDS

African Advisory Board - The African Advisory Board was formed to advocate for the needs of African patients and its members currently represent 7 different African countries. Members are educated about Health Center services and, in turn, advise the Health Center on concerns of African patients. Contact Mercy at 978-322-8536 for more information.

Chronic Disease Self Management Program - Developed by Stanford University this program helps individuals who live with long term health conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease better manage their illness. Individuals learn several tools including to problem solving, communicating with providers, improving fitness and using relaxation techniques. For more information, call Sidney at 978-322-8539. Classes are offered in multiple languages.

Promotores de Salud - a five week course to introduce patients to health care system, provide insurance options, and outline ways to improve family and community health. Currently offered in Spanish and Portuguese through the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation. Contact Elisa at 978-322-8525 for more information.

Spanish Diabetes Support Groups - offers patients an environment to learn about living with diabetes and offers a place to share common concerns. To learn more please call Pam at 978-322-8614.

Southeast Asian Resources for Culture & Health - The SEARCH program is designed to serve the needs of a growing Southeast Asian community in Greater Lowell. The program targets three growing groups of Southeast Asians: Cambodians, Laotians, and Vietnamese. Call Sidney for more information at 978-746-7829.

LCHC TEEN COALITION YOUTH PROGRAMS

A.D.A.M. Project (Awareness and Development of Adolescent Minds) is a leadership, life and work skills development program for in-school youth that assists youth in obtaining their personal milestones, including graduating high school, preparing for advanced education and/or the workforce. The group is also working with the Lowell Small Business Association to provide participants a series of workshops on business development and microenterprise.

Afrofusion is a program for youth of African descent. The program celebrates cultures of the African Diaspora through: artistic expression, film screenings, discussions and cultural enrichment activities. Utilizing the Making Proud Choices curriculum, participants are empowered to make informed decisions that will reduce their risk for unplanned pregnancies and STDs as well develop leadership skills. The program is open to youth of African descent and anyone interested in learning about the African Diaspora.

Journey to Healing Program - Engages Cambodian youth as peer leaders in addressing the unique needs of families that experienced the Khmer Rouge era and refugee resettlement with a special emphasis on creative expression and healthy coping strategies. JTH challenges participants to reduce risk factors associated with alcohol and other drug use and the transmission of HIV and other STD's among Southeast Asian youth.

League of Youth (LOY) Members are peer leaders who have received over 200 hours of leadership training. The 4-part series on health education includes conflict resolution, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS education, and identifying responsibilities. Another component of LOY is focused solely on substance abuse prevention which is done in collaboration with the Lowell Roundtable of Substance Abuse Prevention. The roundtable provides training on substance abuse prevention. Some examples include shoulder tap surveys, compliance checks which seek to reduce the sales and purchase of alcohol/tobacco products by minors in our community.

Lowell Youth Violence Prevention Coalition: Youth Reaching Out (YRO) consists of partnership between five youth agencies within the city of Lowell; Lowell Community Health Center Teen Coalition, United Teen Equality Center, Big Brother Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Club and YWCA of Greater Lowell. The coalition has two initiatives, the City of Lowell Youth Council and Youth & Police Relations. The coalition engages youth and city officials to build better relationships between the two through community organizing and dialogues.
